Alumni from Law ’61, ’71, ‘76, ‘81 and ‘86 celebrated class reunions during the Fall of 2011. Law ’61 became the newest members of Queen’s Tricolour Guard (graduates of 50 years or more), and the second Faculty of Law class to achieve this honour. They celebrated their 50th reunion on October 22 with a cocktail reception hosted by Dean Flanagan at The University Club, followed by dinner. Law ’71 celebrated their 30th reunion early in September with a cocktail party at the Frontenac Club and dinner at Chez Piggy. Both Law ’76 and Law ’86 chose the weekend of September 24th for their class reunions. Law ’76 enjoyed a number of activities in Kingston on Saturday afternoon and gathered in a private dining room at the Radisson Hotel for dinner that evening. Law ’86 kicked off their reunion weekend at the Grad Club on Friday night. On Saturday they organized a baseball game then headed to the Radisson Hotel for dinner and dancing. Alumni from Law ’91, ’96, ’01 and ’06 returned to Kingston to celebrate their reunions. The Faculty of Law hosted a continental breakfast, class photos and tours of Macdonald Hall. Alumni had the opportunity to view four newly refurbished classrooms in the lower level and the Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP Classroom on the 2nd floor, a videoconference facility with state-of-the-art educational technology. Dean Flanagan hosted his annual Alumni Cocktail Reception at The University Club followed by class reunion dinners.

The annual Toronto alumni celebration was held at The National Club this year. Prior to the cocktail reception, Dean Bill Flanagan invited members of the Dean’s Council to participate in a discussion. Alumni, incoming students and friends gathered with Dean Flanagan at receptions hosted and sponsored by Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. The Dean provided an update of recent Queen’s Law initiatives including the refurbishment of four classrooms in Macdonald Hall, the largest of which was renamed the Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP classroom in honour of the firm’s generous support of this project.

Students had an opportunity to participate in a panel/roundtable discussion followed by a reception at Reed Smith LLP. Jayne Stoyles, Law ’96, recipient of the 2010 Tarnopolsky Human Rights Award, worked at the Red Cross and the Coalition for an International Criminal Court before creating a new organization, the Canadian Centre for International Justice. The Alumni Speaker Series and the International Speakers Series, jointly invited Ms Stoyles to visit Queen’s Law and talk about the fascinating work she has been involved with.

The Soberman family, Queen’s Law faculty, staff, alumni and friends joined together to celebrate the memory of Professor Emeritus Dan Soberman, former dean and a founding professor of Queen’s Law. A luncheon reception was held in Ban Righ Fireside Lounge followed by a memorial ceremony in Grant Hall.
Tributes were given by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada and Law ’66 graduate, whom was hired immediately upon graduation by Professor Soberman for his first teaching position at Queen’s Law. They remained close colleagues during Mr. Johnston’s time at Queen’s, sharing an academic interest in corporate law. John Hucker, former Secretary General of the CHRC (Canadian Human Rights Commission) and personal friend spoke to Dan's work in human rights and also to his work in the North. Donald Savage, former Executive Director of CAUT and acquaintance of Dan’s spoke about Dan’s work on academic freedom and tenure. Jon Thompson, an Emeritus Professor at UNB in Fredericton, spoke about Dan's work as an arbitrator and his involvement in the Nancy Olivieri affair at U of T.

Alumni from Law ’65, ’70, ’75 and ’80 returned to Kingston to celebrate class reunions. Dean Flanagan hosted a continental breakfast and student guided tours of Macdonald Hall on Saturday morning for all classes. Law ’65 attended the Gael’s football game and dinner at Megalos restaurant. Law ’70 held their reunion at the Ambassador Conference Resort, beginning with a “Welcome Back” reception on Friday evening and a buffet dinner on Saturday night. All reunion events for Law ’75 were held in Gananoque. Classmates enjoyed golfing, shopping, dinner and dancing at the Gananoque Inn. Law ’80 held class reunion celebrations at the Donald Gordon Center including a reception and cheque presentation to the law school on Friday evening; a full day of football, spa treatments and golf on Saturday and their 30th reunion dinner on Saturday evening.

Faculty, alumni and students enjoyed an end-of-term barbeque lunch and the LSS Teaching Awards presentation.
A lecture was given by Professor Ronald J Gilson, Meyers Professor of Law and Business at Stanford University and the Stern Professor of Law and Business at Columbia University, entitled " Economically Benelovent Dictators: Lessons for Developing Democracies ".

Katherine Tew Darras, Law '94, hosted a small but engaged group of Queen's law alumni for a breakfast gathering on October 9, 2009 at her office, International Swaps and Derivatives Association, Inc.. Dean Bill Flanagan attended and provided an update on highlights and achievements of the law school over the past year.
Alumni, current students and friends of the Kingston-area gathered with Dean Flanagan and Queen's Law faculty and staff in Wallace Hall on September 30, 2009 for a visit from one of the law school's most accomplished graduates, the Honourable Thomas Cromwell, Law '76. Justice Cromwell, opened his visit with a brief introductory speech followed by answering questions from the audience about serving on Canada's top court. The visit was followed by a reception in Macdonald Hall's student lounge, where students and alumni had the opportunity to talk to Justice Cromwell one-on-one.

Alumni from the Toronto-area joined Dean Flanagan for a night of mingling and reconnecting with old friends at Far Niente Restaurant in Toronto.
Alumni, incoming students and friends from the Ottawa-area gathered with Dean Flanagan and Queen's Law faculty and staff for a reception at Ogilvy Renault LLP, which hosted the event. Ian Clarke, Law '05, former LSS President, welcomed Dean Flanagan and guests on behalf of Ogilvy Renault LLP and Dean Flanagan provided an update of recent initiatives at the law school.
Alumni from Law '74, '79, '84, '89 and '02 returned to Kingston to celebrate their reunions. The Faculty of Law hosted a light lunch, cocktail reception, class photos, as well as student guided tours of Macdonald Hall and an information session about the Queen's Law castle program at the Herstmonceux Castle in the United Kingdom.
Alumni, faculty, staff, friends and members of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts ("AFCC") gathered in honour of Professor Bala with a conference, reception and dinner at Queen's Stirling Hall D and Ban Righ Hall. Justice Harvey Brownstone, Justice Jennifer Blishen, Philip Epstein, Ann Merritt, Braham Siegel and Justice Jim Williams were guest speakers at this event.

Alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students gathered for a cocktail reception in the Macdonald Hall courtyard. The reception followed a panel on Career Options: Rewarding Legal Careers in Small to Mid-size Legal Markets, which was organized by the Career Services Office and featured several local alumni.
London-based alumni joined Dean Bill Flanagan and Queen's Law students studying in England at the International Study Centre, Global Law Programs, for a wine and cheese reception hosted by Clifford Chance LLP.
Alumni and friends from the Ottawa-area gathered with the Dean and faculty for the annual Ottawa alumni reception, which was held at the Fairmont Château Laurier. The reception coincided with the Ontario Court of Justice's annual conference, so alumni members of the Court from other regions of the province were also in attendance. The Honourable Chief Justice Annemarie Bonkalo of the Ontario Court of Justice was a guest speaker.
Seema Kalia, Law '93, hosted a cocktail reception for New York-based alumni at her home in Manhattan.
Alumni, friends, faculty and staff celebrated the launch of Queen's Law's newest scholarship, the David Mullan Entrance Scholarship, named in honour of Professor Emeritus David Mullan, LL.M. '73. Justice Marshall Rothstein of the Supreme Court of Canada was a guest speaker at the event, which was held at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
