Securities

Insurance

A gift of life insurance is an economical way to leverage your financial support to give a larger and more lasting gift.

Bequests

Consider including the Law Faculty in your will.

The most common types of bequests are:

Specific bequest, by which Queen's Law would receive a specific dollar amount or stated fraction of the estate.

Residual bequest, by which Queen's Law would receive all or a percentage of the remainder of a donor's estate after other specific legacies have been fulfilled.

Contingent bequest, by which Queen's Law would receive all or a share of the estate only in the event of the prior death of other named beneficiaries.

Trust remainder bequest, by which named beneficiaries receive income from a trust established in the will. Upon the death of the surviving beneficiaries, all or part of the principal would then pass to Queen's Law.

Restricted or Unrestricted Bequests. Gifts to Queen's Law fall into two general categories: Those unrestricted as to use, and those restricted to specific purposes.

With bequests to an institution, it is natural to think first of specifying their use. Doing so, however, may defeat your purpose because of changing circumstances. We suggest that you ask your lawyer to include authorization in your will for the University’s Board of Trustees to change the use of your gift if it cannot be applied as originally intended. The Board of Trustees may then direct an unrestricted bequest to an area of maximum need.

Annuities

Many seniors would like to make a gift to Queen's Law, but must take into account special considerations. The most common concern is that a cash gift now will leave them short of future income. For these donors, a charitable gift annuity is often the most desirable option for making a significant contribution while maintaining future financial security.

A charitable gift annuity is an agreement whereby you make an irrevocable gift to Queen's Law and in return you receive a regular income for as long as you live. You have 10 days to change your mind after making this commitment. Queen's will pay you a fixed income for your lifetime, based on your age and according to the rate offered at the time the annuity commences. The payment frequency is monthly.

At the time of the annuitant's death (or at the time of the second person's death in joint and survivorship annuities), the portion of the donation remaining becomes available for the work of Queen's Law.

The plan allows you to give a substantial gift without losing the benefit of the revenue your capital is earning. In fact, when the tax advantages are considered, many donors find their net return is higher through a gift annuity.
