Application Procedures

Documentation Required

The following documentation must be submitted to Nancy Somers, Manager of Academic Programs by Friday, January 13, 2012:

1.   Queen's University Exchange Application Form

2.   Application Summary and Consent Form

3.   Queen's University Bursary Assistance Application Form

5.   Personal Statement

The personal statement is a letter explaining:

  • the reasons for your interest in the exchange, including any contributions the exchange will make to your future academic or employment plans
  • any previous experience with international study or internships
  • the extent of your involvement in the law school and/or another community
  • your financial ability to spend a term at the host university (many institutions require evidence of financial ability).

6.   A letter of reference from a Queen's Law faculty member

Faculty may send reference letters by e-mail to Nancy Somers.


Selection Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by Assistant Deans Gillian Ready and Jane Emrich. 

The following criteria will be used to select students, unless the terms of a specific exchange agreement provide for other criteria:

  1. The number of students permitted by the terms of the agreement to participate in the exchange.
  2. Academic standing (based on transcript and letter of reference, awards).
  3. The academic appropriateness of the exchange in light of the student's current and undergraduate studies, future academic and career plans, previous international study, etc. (based on the personal statement and letter of reference)
  4. Evidence of good character and the ability to represent Queen's Law (based on letter of reference, personal statement, and contributions to the community).
  5. Personal / family reasons for the proposed exchange, language facility, etc.

Students will be told whether they have been selected to go on exchange before Reading Week, but the selection cannot be confirmed until the student has completed the paperwork required by Queen's University and the host university.
