Course Selection/Academic Notes

Course Load and Credits on Exchange

Queen's students on exchange must take a full course load at the host university (see the course load requirements listed for each of the partner universities at Universities with Exchange Agreements with Queen's Faculty of Law) . This will be deemed the equivalent of 15 credits at Queen's Faculty of Law.

Students on exchange may not receive more than 15 credits, regardless of their course load.

Exchange Course Approval

Students accepted to go on exchange must obtain approval of their course selection from Jane Emrich, Assistant Dean of Students.

To seek approval, send an email as soon as possible after notification of your selection to emrichj@queensu.ca with the course number, calendar description and credit weight for each course you wish to take, and the total credit total. Any subsequent changes must be approved by Jane Emrich.

Students may not take a course similar in content to a course previously taken at Queen's Law or the International Study Centre. In cases of doubt, the student must demonstrate that the course content at the partner university is substantially different. The course description from the partner university may be forwarded to an appropriate faculty member at Queen's Law for consideration.

Students may not fulfill Queen's Law upper-year degree requirements (ie the Substantial Term Paper and Practice Skills and Advocacy Requirements or the Civil Procedure course) on exchange without prior permission of the Academic Standing and Policies Committee.

Electronic Course Selection for Courses at Queen's

Students MUST select courses for both terms during the academic year of their exchange. Plans do change unexpectedly! Students will be removed from their Queen's courses for the term once they have departed on exchange.

Students must not select courses needed for degree requirements for the term they plan to be away.

Post-Exchange Courses at Queen's Law

After returning from an exchange, students are not allowed to take a course at Queen's Law that is similar in content to a course for which exchange credit was awarded. In cases of doubt, the course description from the partner university may be forwarded to an appropriate faculty member at Queen's Law for consideration.

Transcripts

Students are graded on exchange according to the standards of the host university.  Marks earned on exchange will not be included on the student's Queen's transcript. Once we have received the student's transcript from our exchange partner, the Queen's transcript will be amended to note that the student was on exchange and that 15 transfer credits were obtained.

It is the responsibility of the student to obtain a transcript of marks from the host institution for his or her personal use.  Students should ensure that they obtain sufficient original transcripts for all possible future employment, licensing and graduate studies applications.
