Program Description

The School of Law at Tsinghua University in Beijing was founded in 1911 and re-established in 1995. It is one of the leading law schools in Asia, and its faculty members include some of China's best legal scholars.  It has strong study abroad and exchange programs, and its international partners include some of the best universities around the world including Harvard, Yale, Stanford and NYU.

Tsinghua is the first university to offer an LL.M in Chinese Law program taught fully in English for international law students. The program is designed to provide a step-by-step, comprehensive introduction to the Chinese legal system. To facilitate students' learning and practice of Chinese law, the program teaches not only black-letter law, but also provides students with insight into the interaction of Chinese law with China's culture, economy and society.

Queen's Law has entered into a unique agreement with Tsinghua which allows two J.D. students per year to attend the program for the fall semester, when most of the compulsory and basic courses are offered. Queen's students who have completed the fall semester at Tsinghua may return within two years to complete the winter / spring semester and be awarded the LL.M. degree.  Should a participating student choose to pursue an LL.M. degree, an additional five courses plus a research paper (as the degree thesis) will be required.

Participating Queen's students are essentially on a formalized ‘letter of permission', and thus pay tuition fees for one term to Tsinghua and not Queen's.  The tuition fees for a semester in 2009-10 are approximately RMB 73,000 yuan (approximately Canadian $13,500). Note that students are not eligible for financial assistance from Queen's.

Tsinghua offers students housing in on-campus dormitories with easy access to classrooms, faculty offices, and other university facilities at a cost of approximately $500 US per month.
