David Stratas, Law '84, pictured earlier this year with his record seven LSS teaching awards from Queen's Law, was appointed to the Federal Court of Appeal on December 11, 2009.

On December 11, 2009, Minister of Justice Rob Nicholson appointed David Stratas, Law ‘84, to the Federal Court of Appeal. A highly regarded administrative and constitutional law litigator, Justice Stratas was a partner at Heenan Blaikie in Toronto prior to his appointment.

“Not only has David Stratas been one of Canada’s leading and highly sought after litigators, he has also been a tremendous friend of Queen’s Law for many years and a much-loved teacher,” says Dean Bill Flanagan.

Teaching the popular Advanced Constitutional Law seminar course since 1994, Justice Stratas has received no less than seven teaching awards during his time at Queen's – more than any other teacher in the history of the law school. He also received the 2005 H.R.S. Ryan Alumni Award from Queen's Law, one of the school’s highest alumni distinctions, as well as the Queen's University Alumni Association's Mentorship Award for his significant and ongoing contribution to the education and development of Queen's students in fall 2009.

In addition to teaching and maintaining an extraordinarily busy practice, from 1990 to 2001, he also authored The Charter of Rights in Litigation: Direction from the Supreme Court of Canada, a well-known loose-leaf service analyzing Supreme Court of Canada judgments concerning the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“All of us at the Faculty extend our warmest congratulations to him,” says Dean Flanagan.
