Andrew Prevost, Law '10, and Brad Allgood, Law '10, are two Queen's Law students participating in "Movember" to raise money for prostate cancer research.

If you have noticed an unusually high number of moustaches around Macdonald Hall in the last month, you’re not alone. This November, university students across Canada have been participating in “Movember,” a charity event that raises money for prostate cancer research. Participants start the month clean-shaven, and then grow a moustache to raise funds and awareness regarding men's health. Queen’s Law has been particularly active in this fundraiser with over 35 students and five faculty members, including Dean Bill Flanagan, getting involved as “Mo Bros.”

“I think it’s been a really great initiative that most of the law school has embraced,” said Brad Allgood, Law ‘10. “It gives people something fun to talk about in November that doesn’t involve exams.”

“Movember” first started in 2004 in Australia, but has quickly spread across the globe. Its goal of raising awareness of men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer, the top cancer threat to Canadian males, has struck a chord with many. All “Movember” proceeds go to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada.

While moustaches had their “hey day” with Tom Selleck and Magnum P.I. in the 1980s, they can still turn heads today.

"It’s amazing the reactions you get at first because it’s something so radically different in style, but it’s equally impressive how quickly people understand; cancer has touched so many lives,” said Andrew Prevost, Law ‘10.

Queen’s Law “Mo Bros” (and their female supporters, called “Mo Sistas”) have so far as a team raised more than $7,000 for prostate cancer research. Many of the team’s participants have been closely touched by cancer and are doing what they can to help stop the disease.

“I lost my mother, an aunt and an uncle to cancer, all at a relatively young age,” Professor Tsvi Kahana said.“So if by doing this I can help the cause of fighting cancer, it is totally worth it.”
