On November 24, 2008, Queen’s University thanked its generous alumni and friends with “Tag Day.”  Tag Day, now in its second year, celebrates donors by marking gifts across campus with tags in the university’s tri colours and drawing students’ attention to the importance of philanthropy.

"The financial support of our alumni makes a huge difference, and allows Queen’s Law to maintain its position as one of the best law schools in the country,” said Deanna Morash, Assistant Dean of Career Services and Alumni Relations.  “We hope that highlighting some of the ways that alumni have given back to the law school will inspire people to give, through the 2009 ThankQ fund this year and in the future.”

Items which have been provided to Queen's University through gifts from alumni and friends were marked with tags, such as the one above in the university's tri colours.

Queen's Law has been greatly enriched by alumni donations from contributions to building renovations to enhancing students’ legal education.  Students have directly benefited from alumni gifts through grants from the Dean’s Excellence Fund, which supports conferences, internships and visitors to the law school, and through awards, such as the recently established David Mullan Renewable Entrance Scholarship.  Queen’s Legal Aid and the Correctional Law Project, which provide important hands-on student learning opportunities, have received significant financial support from alumni over the years.  The Lederman Law Library has also received many donations, particularly from alumni on the judiciary.

Graduating classes also play a key role in giving back to the law school with their annual ThankQ gifts.  Previous classes have used their funds to purchase items such as new classroom chairs and student mailboxes.

Plaques recognizing gifts from alumni and friends, including the various years’ ThankQ gifts, are visible throughout the law school.

"I have enjoyed my time at Queen’s Law so much that I wouldn’t mind giving back as an alumna,” said student and Queen’s Legal Aid volunteer Janelle Khan, Law ’10.  “Then I think, my time here is so great because someone gave back.  This is why alumni contribution is so important.  Their help allows us to feel proud of Queen’s Law, and it is this spirit and energy that will keep our law school running for generations to come.”
