Thousands of people across Canada showed up in sweats to participate in the annual CIBC Run for The Cure on Sunday, October 1 2006. Out in full force was the team from Queen's Law, proudly bearing the Faculty of Law name and ready to run for breast cancer.

Headed by Fazilah Hussain, '08, the group of 18 law students met at St. Laurence Collage in Kingston, posed for a team photo and took their place alongside hundreds of other members of the community at the starting line.

"It's a great cause," said Hussain, "Most people know someone that is affected by (breast cancer) or have had personal experience with it. But even if you haven't it's a great way to get involved and give back to the community."

Either by running, or walking, or even a little of both, every member of the Queen's Law team crossed the finish line, cheered on by a growing crowd of spectators. Sweaty and tired, they took a well-deserved breather.

The support for the race continues to grow, and every year more people participate. The group from Queen's Law has participated in the event for the past three years. The Queen's Law Cancer Society, started in 2006 by recent graduate Ashley Faust, organized the first group of students to take part and participate in the Run. The Cancer Society continues this tradition every year, alongside numerous other projects, all with the goal of raising money for cancer.

In total, the group of students from Queen's Law was able to raise approximately $2330 to donate to breast cancer research. "We went about getting sponsors by using the website the CIBC sets up for the Run," explained Hussain, "They have it set up so the team can register together, and also allow you to set up your own page, where you can put your picture and send it to everyone you know."

The team members who raced on Sunday shared an experience that they hope to have again next year. Pledging to come back in the Fall of 2007, they intend to beat this year's impressive total. Hussain also hopes that through word of mouth, more students will take part in the Run.

"It's nice when you are there as a part of a group and are recognized as being a part of the Queen's Law team," said Hussain. "Going outside the walls of the law school as representatives of Queen's Law emphasizes the importance of our role in giving back to the community."
