Rainy weather didn’t stop 27 Queen’s Law students from joining thousands of Canadians participating in the annual CIBC Run for the Cure on October 4, 2009. Running, walking and jogging, the students raised almost $4,000 for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

This year, Queen’s Law Cancer Society (QLCS) co-presidents Kathryn Robinson, Law ’10, and Andrew Maloney, Law ’11, organized the largest team Queen’s Law has produced since it began taking part in the event in 2006. “Queen’s Law is a wonderful community with great energy and enthusiasm and we are happy as a group to channel that energy to such a worthy cause,” Andrew says.

Given the turnout and contributions, the first major event of the year for QLCS can be regarded as a success. Hopes are high that the momentum can be carried forward into the rest of the year’s fundraising efforts, such as the popular “Jail n’ Bail” which “jails” students and professors until their “bail” is met – proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society for Cancer Research.

The Run for The Cure in particular, offers QLCS and members of the Queen’s Law community an opportunity to take part in a charitable event alongside many other groups which make up the larger Kingston community.

Piper Morley, Law ’11, one of the top fundraisers for this year’s run, enjoyed the friendly atmosphere that prevailed over the wet and chilly weather.

“I participated in the Run for the Cure because fundraising for breast cancer research has contributed to significant breakthroughs by the scientific community,” Piper says. “I hope that the funds raised by Queen's Law can help in making a positive impact on people's lives.”
