Oxford law professor offers course at Queen's

Professor Andrew Ashworth of the University of Oxford is visiting Queen's Law in the week of September 28, 2009, to teach a one-credit course and present a Faculty lecture. The course, Advanced Topics in Criminal Law Theory, will begin on September 29. He will present the seminar, Preventative Function of Criminal Law, to students and faculty on September 28 at 4:00 p.m. in Macdonald Hall, Room 201.

Ashworth, who currently holds the Vinerian Chair of English Law at All Soul's College in the University of Oxford, the latest in a line of legal scholars that includes Blackstone, Dicey, Holdsworth, Cheshire, and Rupert Cross, received an LL.B. from the London School of Economics in 1968, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1973. He is the Chair of the Sentencing Advisory Panel for England and Wales, as well as the author of a number of books on criminal law and sentencing, including Principles of Criminal Law (5th ed); Principled Sentencing: Readings on Theory and Policy (2nd ed., with A. von Hirsch and J. Roberts);Proportionate Sentencing: Exploring the Principles (with A. von Hirsch); The Criminal Process (with M. Redmayne); and Sentencing and Criminal Justice.

"Andrew Ashworth is recognized internationally as one of the leading thinkers active in the areas of criminal law and sentencing theory," Professor Allan Manson says. "His course, Advanced Topics in Criminal Law Theory, is a great addition to our criminal law offerings. We are very excited about having Professor Ashworth with us, albeit briefly, this term."

Upper-year students may enroll in the course, LAW-627, via QCARD starting on September 8.
