Jeffrey Fung, Law '08, founder and CEO of MyLawBid
|
Jeffrey Fung, Law ‘08, left his Bay Street job this summer to pursue a new venture. He founded and is CEO of MyLawBid, an online business development tool that connects legal professionals with those who need legal services.
The idea for MyLawBid came to Fung when he and his wife bought their first condo and found that the process of looking for a real estate lawyer was not as simple or quick as they had anticipated.
“We thought there had to be an easier way to get information about lawyers and to reach out to a greater number of lawyers at one time,” he says.
MyLawBid quickly connects legal professionals and potential clients in three steps. After registering for the service, those seeking legal assistance submit an anonymous Request for Legal Proposal (RLP) that details their legal issue. Lawyers then may respond to the RLP by outlining their expertise, how they can address that client’s issue, and what their fees and terms of payment are. Clients then select and contact the legal professional they feel best suits their needs.
Fung, a Dean’s Key recipient and the 2007-08 LSS President, spent three years at McMillan LLP, two of which were within its corporate restructuring group dealing with bankruptcies and insolvencies of major companies. He left when he felt his strengths required him to focus full-time on managing his own business, which he refers to as his “hands-on MBA.”
“I really like to build things, and I have the ability to make decisions and take the action I believe is necessary for a project to succeed,” he says. “It is very rewarding to know that I can still help people gain access to legal resources, even though I am no longer a practising lawyer.”
