Combined J.D/Master of Business Administration

Queen's New J.D./M.B.A. Combined Program: your opportunity to be admitted to a premier law school and the #1 ranked M.B.A. Program in Canada: see http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/rankings/

Program Outline

This four-year combined program capitalizes on the internationally acclaimed intensive 12-month Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree offered by Queen’s School of Business and the rich program in business law offered by Queen’s Faculty of Law.

Students admitted to the combined program have two alternative options to complete the combined program early in three and a half years:

  1. Combined J.D.-M.B.A. students are eligible to apply for, and be selected to participate in the International Business Law Program at the Bader International Study Centre to earn nine upper-year J.D. credits. These students may also use cross-credits from the M.B.A. degree equivalent to six upper-year J.D. credits earned in two 1.5-credit M.B.A. courses to complete the degree in three and one-half (3.5) years.
  2. In the Queen’s Law Campus option, combined program students may use M.B.A. courses equivalent to 12 upper-year J.D. credits to complete both degrees in three and one-half (3.5) years.

An application must be made to OLSAS for admission to the J.D. degree program by November 1, 2011, and a concurrent, separate application must be made to the School of Business at Queen’s for admission as a graduate student in the Master of Business Administration degree program. Applications are accepted to the MBA program in four rounds commencing September 30, November 18, February 3, and March 9.  See: http://business.queensu.ca/mba_programs/mba/application_process.php.

Early Completion Options

A student may complete the program in three-and-a-half years, rather than the usual four years. While fulfilling the first-year JD course requirements, students may apply for admission to the International Business Law Program at the Bader International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England to earn nine upper-year JD credits. Transfer credit equivalent to six upper-year JD credits from cross-crediting courses in the MBA program may be used, for a total of 15 upper-year credits (equivalent to one term at full-courseload) to complete the JD degree requirements early. An on-campus option for early completion in three-and-a-half years is also available with cross-credits from the MBA portion of the combined degree pursuant to the Faculty of Law policy on course registrations at Queen’s outside the Faculty of Law.

    Tuition and Financial Assistance

Tuition will be charged in accordance with registered status as a law student in the first, second and fourth years of the combined program. Tuition in the third year of the combined program will be in accordance with registered status as a graduate business student in the MBA program. Merit-based and need-based financial assistance will be available according to registered status for the academic year.
