Civil Law/Common Law Joint Degree Program

Program Information

Queen's has an agreement with the University of Sherbrooke which allows students the opportunity to receive both a common law and civil law degree in four years. In this program, you can study at Sherbrooke for one year after you graduate from Queen's to obtain a civil law degree, provided that you are fluent in French. Similarly, graduates of University of Sherbrooke are eligible to study at Queen's for one year in order to receive a common law degree. If there is sufficient space, graduates of other Quebec law schools will be accepted for admission to this joint program.

Graduates of the Civil Law/Common Law Joint Degree Program are eligible to apply for the Bar Admission course and articling positions to practice in any province or territory in Canada.

Admissions Information Queen's Law admits civil law graduates from the University of Sherbrooke pursuant to an exchange agreement that enables completion of a common law degree in one academic year. Applications from University of Sherbrooke applicants are due on March 1st for admission the following September. If there is sufficient space, civil law graduates from other Quebec law schools may apply for admission to Queen's to receive a common law degree. Applications for admission to the joint common law/civil law program are available directly from Queen's Faculty of Law and are due by May 1st. Applications must be supported by a personal statement, at least one academic letter of reference and some documentation establishing fluency in written and spoken English.
