The Faculty of Law at Queen’s University has a distinguished tradition of academic excellence in teaching, scholarship and learning, coupled with a longstanding commitment to community and collegiality. Queen's Law is the school of choice for students seeking a first-class education with an exceptional degree of faculty and student engagement. The Queen’s J.D. program offers outstanding international study and work abroad opportunities, interdisciplinary programs and superb experiential learning through four clinical programs, moots and Queen’s Law Journal. The Queen’s J.D. offers a strong curriculum with an optimal balance of theoretical and practice skills courses, building on longstanding strength in public law, criminal law and family law with growing strength in business law, international law and labour law.

Queen's Law had exceptional results in the recent 2009 Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE), which compared results from 11 Canadian law schools and 71 US schools. Comparing our results with our peer schools, Queen's Law students reported an exceptional degree of satisfaction with:

  • Study abroad opportunities
  • Academic advising and planning
  • Personal counseling
  • Participation in law school sponsored activities
  • Providing the support necessary to succeed academically and thrive socially
  • Attending campus events and activities
  • Financial counseling
  • High quality of relationships with faculty and staff

Other key results demonstrated that unlike schools in large urban centres, our law students rarely have a long commute to school, a major factor in measuring student engagement. Queen's Law is responsive to the diverse interests and career aspirations of our students, with a placement rate for our graduates that is among the very highest of any Canadian law school. Queen's University boasts an outstanding record for making the costs of legal education transparent and financially accessible to a diverse student population.

On February 28, 2008, the Queen’s University Senate approved the change from the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree to the Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree to signify that the program is a second-entry professional program. All current law students, prospective law students and alumni should inform themselves about the J.D. Conversion Process.
