Welcome from the Dean
Queen’s Faculty of Law is renowned for its special combination of academic excellence and community engagement, placing it in the top tier of Canadian law schools.
- Queen’s is the only university in Canada with its own study-abroad facility, the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) at Herstmonceux Castle in England. Each May and June the law school offers the Global Law Programs with a range of courses in Public International Law and International Business Law, with an additional new course in the Philosophy of International Law planned for the summer of 2012. These programs include study trips to international law organizations throughout Europe. We also offer students a wide variety of exchange opportunities at some of the world’s leading law schools in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. With our BISC and exchange programs, we are able to offer more than 50 percent of our students a study-abroad opportunity, a proportion significantly higher, we believe, than that of any other law school in the world. We are proud to call ourselves “Canada’s Global Law School.”
- We are a leader among Canadian law schools in interdisciplinary study opportunities, including combined JD programs with business, economics, industrial relations and public administration. We also offer a civil law/common law combined degree program in partnership with the University of Sherbrooke.
- We offer a wide range of clinical education and experiential learning opportunities, giving our students “hands-on” opportunities to develop legal skills. In 2011, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Queen’s Legal Aid and the launch of a new Elder Law Clinic. Each year we are able to offer more than one-third of our students a hands-on learning opportunity.
- We are also a leader among Canadian law schools in the key indicators of student engagement. For example, more than 93 percent of our students evaluate their experience at Queen’s as good or excellent, with 47 percent reporting “excellent,” among the highest of any Canadian law school. We are further advantaged by our location outside of a large urban setting. At Queen’s, students are uniquely and famously engaged in the life of the school. We are a community that is committed to ensuring our students have the all the academic and personal support they need to thrive in their studies.
- We have one of the best placement rates of any Canadian law school, with between 75-80 percent of our students typically securing an articling position by the time they enter third year, and virtually all of our students finding articling positions by the time of their graduation or shortly thereafter.
Queen’s Law is the school of choice for students seeking a first-class legal education in a community setting, along with a unique array of international, interdisciplinary and clinical programs.
