Why Choose Queen's Law?
1. Canada’s Global Law School
- Queen’s is the only university in Canada with its own study-abroad facility, the Bader International Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle in England. Each May and June we offer the Global Law Programs with a range of courses in International Business Law and Public International Law. These programs include study trips to international law organizations throughout Europe. A new intensive course in the Philosophy of International Law will be offered in July 2012, taught by one of the world’s leading legal theorists, Professor Les Green of Oxford University and Queen’s Law.
- We also offer students a wide variety of international exchange opportunities with leading law schools in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. In 2010-11, 40 upper-year students are studying law on exchange. More opportunities to study and work abroad are offered through university-wide exchange programs, international internships and international letter of permission arrangements.
- Our visitors’ program presents a diverse range of international scholars, and our curriculum encompasses a strong focus on global perspectives in the study of law.
- Queen’s Law offers more than 50% of our students a study-abroad opportunity, a far higher rate, we believe, than that of any other Canadian law school.
2. A Leader in Interdisciplinary Studies
We offer five outstanding combined degree programs:
- Master of Public Administration/JD
- Master of Industrial Relations/JD
- Master of Arts (Economics)/JD
- JD/MBA
- Common Law/Civil Law
3. A Leader in Clinical Education and Experiential Learning
- Queen’s Legal Aid (volunteer or for academic credit)
- Correctional Law Project (for academic credit)
- Queen’s Business Law Clinic (for academic credit)
- Elder Law Clinic (for academic credit)
- Clinical Family Law (for academic credit)
- Pro Bono Students Canada (volunteer)
- Federal Government Internships (for academic credit)
- Clinical Externships (for academic credit)
- 16 Mooting and Advocacy Competitions
In addition to our clinical programs and extensive moot program, we offer a variety of skills-based courses to provide upper-year students with an ample opportunity to develop practice and advocacy skills.
4. Legendary Community Spirit
We earned strong scores in a recent Law School Student Survey of Student Engagement, with results substantially higher than those of the other 11 Canadian schools surveyed on two key indicators:
- 93% of Queen’s third-year law students evaluated their entire experience as good or excellent
- 93% of Queen’s third-year students agreed that if they could start over again, they would choose Queen’s
5. A Leader in Placement Rates
- Placement rates for our graduates continue to be among the very best of any Canadian law school. Between 75-80 percent of our students typically secure an articling position by the time they enter third year, and virtually all of our students find articling positions by the time of their graduation or shortly thereafter.
6. A Leader in Financial Support
- Queen’s University is committed to the goal of ensuring a legal education remains financially affordable to qualified students. In 2010-11, more than $4.4 million in total financial assistance was granted to our students.
