Note: Students entering into first-year J.D. in Sept. 2010 do not participate in the course selection process for their first year courses
Select Your 2010-11 Fall and Winter term courses in March/April 2010 during the course selection period (details below)
15 June 2010 - Deadline to pay outstanding debts.
1 August 2010 - Make Minimum Registration Payment ($1,000 for full time students, $500 for part time students)

Step 1 - Course Selection Schedule for Law Students
Monday, April 5th from 8:00 a.m. to Tuesday, April 6th until 8:00 p.m.
QCard course selection for Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 courses for Law students is open to THIRD year (Law 11) student only. Third-year (Law 11) students will have the first opportunity to select their upper year courses. The course enrolment limits are lowered to leave spaces for second year (Law 12) students. Wednesday, April 7th, 2010
QCard course selection for all Law students is closed.
Thursday, April 8th from 8:00 a.m. to Friday, April 9th until 8:00 p.m.
QCard course selection for Fall 2010 and Winter 2011 courses for Law students is open to SECOND year (Law 12) students only.
Saturday, April 10th from 12:00 am to Friday, April 30th at 8:00 p.m.
QCard course selection for Law students is open to all upper year law students (Law 11 AND Law 12).
Guide to Course Selection Process
MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE 'COURSE & PROGRAM FOR NEXT SESSION (Sept. 2010-Aug. 2011) JD AND UNDERGRAD ONLY, INCLUDES EDUCATION' BUTTON FROM THE QCARD MAIN MENU
1. Review the Queen's Faculty of Law website for course information commencing Wednesday, March 24, 2010.
2. In the event that some courses are full or that you don't satisfy the requirements, you should also prepare a list of alternate course choices.
3. Refer to the Courses of Instruction Section of the Academic Calendar for course descriptions and prerequisites.
4. Ensure the courses you have chosen can be scheduled conflict-free.
QCard will not stop you
from entering courses that conflict. The Faculty of Law does not permit conflicts. Look at your timetable after selecting your courses to ensure it contains no conflicts.
5. Some courses may be blocked which will prevent you from selecting it on QCARD. Students attempting to select a course that has been blocked should pay particular attention to the message displayed on QCARD. The message will provide further information.
6. Be sure to pay close attention to QCARD messages when entering course selections. Examples of some of the messages: warnings about pre- or co-requisites; that a course is FULL; this course cannot be added or dropped using QCARD. Anything other than these could be a systems error.
7. If a course is blocked on QCard, you will need to see Nancy Somers in Macdonald Hall, Room 512.
8. You will not be able to view your timetable on QCard from August 2nd until August 20st. Make sure you print a copy before this time period.
9. If you have not made your Minimum Registration Payment by August 1st, you will not be able to view your timetable.

Course Selection Notes
- As a part-time student you may select a maximum of 12 credits per term.
- As a full time student you may select a maximum of 17 credits per term
- All courses (with a few exceptions - listed next) in the Faculty of Law are included in the course registration process.
- Clinical Correctional Law, Queen's Law Journal, Queen's Legal Aid Additional Credits and Queen's Business Law Clinic must be processed manually.
- ISPs will be processed by Nancy Somers based on the completed form at http://law.queensu.ca/students/jdProgram/studentForms/supervisedProjects.html.
Step 2 - Minimum Registration Payment
- Students are required to make a minimum registration payment by 1 August 2010.
- The Minimum Registration Payment is $1,000.00 for full-time students and $500.00 for part-time students.
- A registration administration fee will apply automatically to students who do not meet the payment deadline.
- Outstanding debts must also be paid to the appropriate department by 15 June 2010, eg., Student Health, Library, Apartment and Housing, etc. If not paid and debts are worth $100 or more, you may not be able to obtain an official transcript. See Student Debtor policy .
- Access QCARD to check your fee status for outstanding debts. Payment is necessary to secure course registrations for 2010-11.
Step 3 - Registration
- Beginning 30 August 2010, you must access QCARD to confirm your registration for the 2010-11 academic year.
- This step serves as your electronic signature, and approval of your biographic and academic information.
- Failure to confirm your registration on QCARD may result in both academic and financial penalties.
- Until this step is completed, changes to your biographic and academic information cannot be made, e.g., courses for which you have received departmental permission (during the September add/drop period) cannot be added on your behalf.
Student Card (Photo-ID) & Validation Sticker
- In order to obtain your student card and/or validation sticker, you MUST first register on QCARD.

Add/Drop on QCard in September 2010
The Add/Drop period begins on Wednesday, September 1 at 4:00 a.m. EST. If you have not made the minimum registration payment, or if you have outstanding debts, you will not be able to add and drop courses. Fall term add/drop ends on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 at 8:00 pm.
NOTE: Courses that cannot be added using QCARD
Sample error messages: "course cannot be added on QCARD", "you have failed the prerequisite or corequisite", "you already have an exclusion", etc.
To request these courses you must contact Nancy Somers Macdonald Hall room 512.
During course selection, the course will be entered on your behalf, if approval is provided. To complete the process, you must sign an Academic Change form.
Changing Biographic Information
Use QCARD to make changes to your biographic information, including mail address, phone number, etc. Keep this updated through the academic year.
QCard Availability
Law students: please see STEP 1 for course selection times.
With the exception of the specified course selection times listed early in this document, QCARD is available 24 hours a day Monday through Saturday. There are times during the 24-hour period when QCARD will not be available due to backups, system maintenance, etc. Backups and system maintenance are usually scheduled after 8:00 p.m. EST/EDT Monday through Saturday.
Student Responsibility

As a student it is your responsibility to ensure that your course registration is accurate and complete, and the courses in which you are registered will meet the requirements for graduation.
- Attend any course selection meetings provided by the law school. Select your courses carefully, noting course prerequisites and limitations on enrolment.
- Published prerequisites are mandatory unless specific exceptions are granted by the instructor concerned. Any exceptions must be done through Nancy Somers, Macdonald Hall, room 512.
- All eligible students, full-time and part-time, wishing to take courses in the Faculty of Law in the Fall-Winter Session MUST participate in the course selection processes.
- Outstanding Debts from 2009-10 must be paid by June 15, 2010. Outstanding debt will prevent course registrations in 2010-11.
- Degree requirements are outlined in the Programs of Study Chapter of the Academic Calendar.
- Students are responsible for adhering to published academic and fees deadlines as outlined in the University's Registration Guide.
