October 29-31, 2010
Keynote Speaker: Roderick A. Macdonald, F.R. Scott,
Professor of Constitutional and Public Law, McGill University
The Queen's Law Journal is delighted to announce that it will be hosting The Second National Law Journal Conference: "Better Scholarship, Better Pedagogy, Greater Openness" in October 2010. The conference will take place on the fifth anniversary of a similar student law journal conference hosted by the Journal in 2005. The Conference will serve as an opportunity for student law review editors to exchange ideas and best practices, discuss issues relevant to the institution of the law journal and legal publishing in Canada and the United States and network with student colleagues from other journals. Included among the scheduled events are a keynote address by renowned scholar Professor Roderick Macdonald and a series of panel discussions that will include presentations by professors, legal research academics and students.
Panel discussions will examine the modern landscape of legal academic publishing, looking closely at issues related to submissions, peer review and interdisciplinary studies and empirical research in law. The role of students in legal publishing will also be examined, with a focus on the pedagogical value of student-edited law journals, as well as staffing, training and evaluation of student editors.
Abstracts on these and related themes are welcomed and encouraged. Abstracts must be a maximum of 400 words, and submitted with the aim of writing a paper to be published in the Spring 2011 issue of the Queen's Law Journal. Abstract submission deadline is May 1, 2010.
Registration for the conference can be done either electronically or through mail, although electronic registration is preferred. Student law journals are invited to bring between 2-10 student editors to participate in and attend the conference. Financial support for student participants may be available. Further details in this regard will be available in June 2010. Students and journals interested in attending are encouraged to seek financial assistance from their law school and other organizations.
