Abebe Assefa Alemu (he/him) is a PhD Candidate in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University, where his research focuses on the experiences of Deaf individuals within the Criminal Justice System in Ethiopia, under the supervision of professor Cherie Metcalf (PhD). His research interests include access to justice, criminal justice, disability rights, human rights, and women's rights.

Before joining Queen’s, Abebe taught various law courses in the Faculty of Law of University of Gondar—such as international human rights law, criminal law, criminal procedure, family law, extra-contractual liability, and African regional human rights law—between September 2009 and September 2020. He also held administrative roles, including Dean of the School of Law (2017-2020), Head of the Department of Law (2013-2015), Legal Aid Director (2015-2017, and Chairperson of the Ethiopian Law Schools’ Consortium (2017-2020).

Abebe has authored and co-authored journal articles, and conference papers, and contributed to book chapters. He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Bahir Dar University (2013) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Hawassa University (2009).

Abebe received the Civil Society Foundation research award and a recipient of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program Fellowship.
