Degree Requirements

Each student is responsible for ensuring that his or her program fulfills the academic and credit requirements for the Juris Doctor degree. The degree requirements with full details are stated in the academic calendar at http://law.queensu.ca/jd-studies/jd-academic-calendar.

  • First-year mandatory courses: 
    • Introduction to Legal Skills
    • Public Law
    • Constitutional Law
    • Contracts
    • Criminal Law
    • Property
    • Torts
  • Second-year mandatory courses: 
    • 4 credits from Civil Procedure (Law 225)
    • 4 credits from Business Associations (Law 440)
  • Upper-years: 
    • 3 credits from Practice Skills
    • 3 credits from Advocacy Skills
    • 3 credits from Legal Ethics and Professionalism
    • Substantial Term Paper
    • 42 additional credits at the 200-level and above for a total of 59 upper year credits
  • Residency requirement: First-year courses and a minimum of 28 upper-year credits must be taken as Queen's JD courses in residence at Queen's Faculty of Law.
