Originally from Newfoundland and raised in Nunavut and Labrador, Karla McGrath is a graduate of Carleton University (BA, 1988), the University of Kentucky College of Law in Lexington, Kentucky (JD, 1996) and Queen’s Law (LL.M., 2013). Following completion of an accreditation year and articles, Karla was called to the bar in both Ontario and New York in 2000. Her law practice in the Kingston area included private practice with a focus on Family Law, seven years as in-house counsel for a local children’s aid society and seven years as an independent chairperson at a federal penitentiary. Karla is the founding Director of the Queen’s Family Law Clinic and, from 2016 until 2024 when she accepted the role of Assistant Dean, she was the Executive Director of the Queen’s Law Clinics. Always an active community volunteer, Karla serves as a member of the Board of Theatre Kingston and holds various roles with the Frontenac Law Association.
