Kate Mitchell brings a strong commitment to justice and a depth of academic and professional experience in criminal and prison law.
Kate holds a Juris Doctor and Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University, and a Master of Laws (LLM) from UCLA, where she specialized in Criminal Justice and Prison Law. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) at the University of Toronto, and her research focus on prisons and the rule of law. She is a Trudeau Scholar and recipient of a Canada Graduate Scholarship–Doctoral Scholarship.
Kate was called to the Ontario Bar in 2018 after clerking at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. She then practiced criminal and prison law in Kingston, where she represented defendants and incarcerated clients in matters involving prison conditions and parole.
Kate brings to her work a passion for systemic reform, along with experience in litigation and legal advocacy. She has served on the executive of the Canadian Prison Lawyers’ Association, where she helped prepare Supreme Court intervention materials and co-organized a national conference focused on prison law.
