“Public Health Law and Intimate Partner Violence in Canada: Needs and Legal Responses”
While pursuing her graduate studies, Marie-Emmanuelle has been able to help women from around the world by offering educational lessons through the democratization of her research. In the beginning of the pandemic, she co-created with her sister a feminist advocacy platform The Sis Official (@the.sisofficial) that now has more than 400K followers. She views her role in academia as an agent of change. Her goal as a public academic is to contribute substantially to public scholarship on the questions of law reforms for intimate partner violence and gender equality that will have real impact on human rights and on the lives of women and girls in Canada and around the world. Her work on social media publicizing the 'Signal for Help' – a gesture that can be used by those at risk of abuse – saved the lives of two women and has now been featured in 1,800 news stories with a potential reach of 1.1 billion people. She is a regular guest on national news programs to give her expert advice (including CTV News, Global News, TVA Nouvelles, iHeartRadio, Radio-Canada, and more).
Her activist and academic work has already drawn the attention of national and international organizations including Plan International, The Canadian Women’s Foundation and The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). She sat on numerous advisory boards, including The Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair of Undergraduate Teaching Excellence at Bishop’s University. She was named as one of the 15 most influential Quebecers in 2022 and was also invited on the prestigious TV show Tout Le Monde en Parle to discuss her expertise.
