Paul Steep is a partner at McCarthy Tetrault LLP in the Litigation Group. He carries on a broad commercial litigation practice with a specific focus on securities litigation including class actions. Paul has an active trial and appellate practice before all levels of the Courts of Ontario, including the Supreme Court of Canada.

Paul’s practice involves major commercial disputes, including contractual disputes, all forms of securities litigation, oppression remedies, directors’ and officers’ liability cases, banking litigation, and class actions. He appears regularly before the OSC (Ontario Securities Commission) on a variety of regulatory and enforcement matters and he also regularly acts on behalf of corporations and persons subject to OSC investigation. In addition, he has conducted trials and appeals in major medical malpractice claims. Paul is a past chair of the firm’s Litigation Group, a pre-eminent group of litigators practising in virtually all areas of civil litigation before a wide variety of courts and tribunals throughout Canada.

Paul is recognized in The Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading lawyer in corporate and commercial, class action and personal injury litigation, director and officer liability and securities law. Paul also appears in the 2012 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, a guide to the leading law firms and practitioners in Canada, as a leading lawyer in the areas of class action and corporate commercial litigation, directors and officers liability, securities, professional liability and medical negligence law. He is listed in the 2007-2013 editions of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, as a leading lawyer in the area of dispute resolution and in the 2008 and 2009 edition of LEXPERT/The American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, as a leading lawyer in the area of corporate commercial litigation and securities litigation.

Paul is a Fellow with American College of Trial Lawyers; Director of The Advocates’ Society and sits on the McCarthy Tetrault LLP Board of Directors.

While at Queen’s, Paul was a Tricolour Society Award Recipient (1977). He was involved with the Queen’s Journal and Vice President of AMS.

Paul teaches at Osgoode and expressed an interested in helping out at Queen’s perhaps in the context of teaching a class session on securities litigation and/or shareholders activism, or participating in a panel discussion on shareholder activism.
