Stanley U. Nweke-Eze's teaching and research centre on international economic law, dispute settlement (including international commercial and investment arbitration), transnational commercial law, and international law and development.
He holds a PhD in International Investment Law from the University of Hong Kong, an LLM in International Economic Law from Harvard Law School, an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge, and a first-class LLB from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. His research has been supported by competitive awards, including the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship.
Professor Nweke-Eze's broader scholarship explores how the rules and institutions governing global trade and foreign investment interact with inclusive development, and how disputes arising under them are resolved. His current research examines how to balance the promotion of cross-border trade and the protection of foreign investment with the regulatory autonomy of states, so that these regimes retain their legitimacy and serve the interests of host governments, investors, and local communities alike. He analyses these dynamics in various contexts, including Africa's economic engagements with Canada and China. His work has been published or is forthcoming in leading peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, and he frequently presents at major academic and practitioner conferences.
Professor Nweke-Eze is admitted to practise law in New York, England and Wales, and Nigeria. He has over a decade of experience as counsel, arbitrator, and expert witness in commercial and investment arbitration. As counsel, he has represented sovereigns, state-owned entities, multinational corporations, and financial institutions in arbitrations, complex commercial litigation, and cross-border and domestic transactions across different jurisdictions and industry sectors. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and has been recognised by leading legal directories, including the Lexology Index and The Legal 500. In addition, he advises governments and international organisations on strengthening legal and policy frameworks for foreign investment, including their development, review, and implementation.
