Stephen Shamie is Hicks Morley's Managing Partner and has been in that role since 2003. He has over 25 years of experience advising and representing employers on a wide variety of matters relating to human resources law. Stephen’s practice emphasizes the negotiation of collective agreements and the defence of employers in arbitration cases, human rights hearings, labour board proceedings and before the courts. He regularly negotiates collective agreements in the hospitality, media, sports and industrial sectors. Stephen has acted as lead employment and labour counsel on many different corporate transactions and has been retained on numerous occasions by both corporations and other law firms. In addition, Stephen represents professional sports leagues on a wide variety of matters.
Stephen is named in the 2005–2017, Lexpert®/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada and listed ‘Most Frequently Recommended’ in The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory. Stephen is listed in International Who's Who of Management Labour and Employment Lawyers, 2013–2017, Who's Who Legal: Canada 2013–2017, Legal 500 Canada 2016, and The Best Lawyers in Canada 2007–2017, with Best Lawyers naming him a 2016 'Lawyer of the Year' in the area of labor and employment law – Toronto. Stephen is also named a 'Notable Practitioner' in the Canada chapter of Chambers Global 2008–2017.
Stephen graduated from Queen’s Law in 1986 and regularly attends to lecture and speak to the students at the law school. In addition, Stephen is a Member of the Advisory Committee for the Faculty of Law Centre for Law in the Contemporary Workforce, and has been in that role since the inception of the Centre.
