Before teaching at Queen’s Law, Susan Hutton was a senior partner in the Competition & Foreign Investment Group at Stikeman Elliott LLP, where she practised for 32 years. She provided Competition Act and Investment Canada Act advice in respect of some of Canada’s most complex mergers and acquisitions, and in addition counselled clients in respect of criminal and civil compliance. Her practice also included trade remedy litigation and anti-corruption compliance. Susan was repeatedly recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers Global and Chambers Canada, which quoted sources as saying she "is superbly pragmatic and understands the issues internationally," and that "her knowledge of the competition regime is incredible." She was frequently listed among the leading competition law practitioners in Canada, and continues to speak and write frequently in the field, with recent guest lectures at McGill, Columbia and the University of Ottawa. She is a member of the CD Howe Competition Policy Council, a Vice-Chair of the International Committee of the ABA’s Section of Antitrust Law, a past-Chair of the CBA’s Competition Law Section, and the founding Editor-In-Chief of the Canadian Competition Law Review.
