Prior to becoming a Mastercard Foundation Fellow and joining Queen’s University Faculty of Law in 2019, Wondwossen Firew held a position as an Assistant Professor of Law at the School of Law of University of Gondar for 10 years. In addition to his academic post, he served the School of Law as its Dean. During the past six years, he held an administrative position, in addition to his academic position. His latest administrative position was Director of the Legal Services Directorate of University of Gondar, with the chief functions of leading and coordinating the overall legal affairs of the University. As Legal Services Director he was also responsible for serving as the legal advisor of the President of the University. He also served as an associate editor and later, as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Ethiopian Legal Studies (IJELS), a journal published under the auspices of the School of Law of University of Gondar. He has also served as an external evaluator in a couple of journals.
Wondwossen's areas of specialization include Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Jurisprudence, Legal Research and Medical Law. In addition to teaching and advising students in these areas, he has published journal articles, a teaching textbook, a book chapter. Another book chapter is at press.
Currently Wondwossen is working on a dissertation title that works towards the crafting of a proper ‘right to mental health’, by taking into account the Ethiopian Constitutional and Human Rights regime.
