Research Participation for Adults Lacking Capacity to Consent
International lessons to inform the implementation of advance research planning for adults who may lack capacity to consent

Legal frameworks governing research with adults lacking capacity to consent require that proxy decisions about research participation represent the person’s wishes about taking part in a study. A number of countries enable individuals who anticipate periods of cognitive impairment to engage in advance research planning, including making an advance research directive. However, the legal status of these arrangements is unclear. This presentation will share key findings from the CONSULT research programme which explored international differences in advance research planning provisions and conducted empirical research to explore the feasibility and acceptability of introducing advance research planning in the UK.
