Life Time: Care Under the Clock
In Canada and around the globe, policymakers and advocates alike have declared a care crisis. Emergency rooms and classrooms strain under the pressure. Our intimate caring duties – tending to family, home, community – are at once contained and overflowing, in perpetual collision against our working hours. In her forthcoming book, Life Time: Care Under the Clock, Rebecca Hall asks, what happens when we talk less about how hard it is to care, and more about how hard it is to care under capitalism? What changes if we think about the care crisis as a temporal crisis, a scarcity of time experienced as a scarcity of care? 
In this work-in-progress seminar, Dr. Hall will discuss the tensions between the valuation of work time under capitalism and the care time we both give and need.

Rebecca Hall is Associate Professor of Global Development Studies at Queen’s University. A feminist political economist and settler scholar, Dr. Hall's research has examined social reproduction and caring labours; labour in the settler colonial context; and the gendered dynamics of resource extraction in Canada. Her forthcoming book, Life Time: Care Under the Clock, combines scholarly analysis with personal narrative. It will be published by McClelland & Stewart (Penguin Random House) in 2027
