Reckoning with Queer History: The Canadian “LGBT Purge” Case and the Limits of Forgiveness
This talk examines the legal and historical legacy of the "LGBT Purge," during which LGBTQ2S+ members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP and federal public service were dismissed between 1955 and 1992. Through legal history and queer theory, it explores the 2018 class-action settlement, its role in reconciliation and the challenges of addressing the lasting impacts of state-sanctioned discrimination.

Daniel Del Gobbo (he/him) is an Assistant Professor and Chair in Law, Gender & Sexual Justice at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. His research explores how legal processes and institutions can be redesigned to promote access to justice and social justice for historically marginalized groups, with a focus on the rights of women and queer and trans people in Canada. Daniel has published and taught widely in the civil procedure, dispute resolution, legal ethics, and law-and-sexuality fields. He is the Canadian co-editor of the International Encyclopaedia of Restorative Justice, North America Volume, which will be published by DeGruyter Brill later this year. His book entitled Feminist Frontlines: Campus Sexual Violence, Conflict Resolution, and Restorative Justice, will be published by the University of Toronto Press in 2027. Before coming to Windsor Law, Daniel was a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the McGill University Faculty of Law. He earned his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2011, LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 2015, and S.J.D. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 2021.
