Women and the law in Ontario, from quiet rebels to advocates for systemic change - a perspective from a 2000 call working in government in Children's Law

The lecture will provide a detailed description of The Office of the Children’s Lawyer, the work that OCL does on behalf of children that empowers girls and will provide highlights of the efforts the Ontario Public Service (OPS) is pursuing to enhance gender equality within the organization.  Excerpts from Mary Jane Mossman's book: "Quiet Rebels, A History of Ontario Women Lawyers", will be explored and discussed in the context of systemic gender barriers, current and past trends of continuity, transformation experienced by female lawyers in Ontario.  The issue of whether women lawyers still remain on the margins of power will be touched on with a discussion of current practicing cohorts, culminating in concluding remarks on “rewriting history”.
