The Queen’s University Faculty of Law presents a special seminar on the rich intellectual heritage and modern practice of Islamic law in commerce and conflict resolution. The first speaker, Dr. Umar Oseni, will unpack the principles of Islamic contract law (fiqh al-mu’amalat), including the ways classical concepts of consent, risk (gharar), and usury (riba) are interpreted in modern commercial contexts. The second speaker, Ibrahim Hussain FCIArb, will explore the history of Muslim dispute resolution, from the prophetic tradition to the institutionalization of sulha (amicable settlement), to modern ADR frameworks. Moderated by Prof. Joshua Karton, an expert in ADR and comparative and international commercial law, this event will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners in law, dispute resolution, Islamic studies, and comparative languages and cultures.
