Aimee Burtch, Recruitment & Admissions Manager, and Andrew Van Overbeke, Admissions Coordinator, hit the road this week to meet with prospective students and answer any questions they have about the law program at Queen’s.

The recruitment cycle kicks off on Sept. 20 with the largest event in Canada for university students who are interested in studying law. The Canadian JD Forum, hosted by the Law School Admissions Council, brings together representatives of most Canadian law schools, as well as many from the U.S. and overseas. “We expect to chat with over 300 students at the forum,” says Burtch, of the one-day event taking place at Toronto’s Hyatt Regency.

Following the Canadian JD Forum, the admissions team is headed to the University of Toronto’s Mississauga Campus on Sept. 21, then to the Ontario Universities’ Fair (OUF) on Sept. 23. More than 130,000 high-school students, parents and educators are expected to attend this annual three-day event held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Throughout the remainder of the fall, admissions staff members will be travelling to several universities across Ontario, as well as stops in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta.

“Students tell us how great it was to be able to meet admissions staff at these events and get direct answers to questions about the admissions process,” says Burtch. “We also have the opportunity to give advice and answer specific questions with information that may not be as readily available on our website or in our print materials.”

Queen’s Law admissions staff are not only visiting fairs geared towards graduate and professional studies but also working with pre-law societies across Ontario. They’ve already arranged visits with eight different pre-law groups, and are willing to meet more: any undergraduate pre-law societies, campus groups with a special interest in law, high school guidance counsellors and law teachers are encouraged to get in touch with the admissions office at jd@queensu.ca. Sessions can be held in person or virtually through a webinar.
