Professors Lisa Kerr and Erik Knutsen are the 2026 recipients of the Stanley M. Corbett Awards for Teaching Excellence. The awards recognize instructors who demonstrate excellence and innovation in teaching, motivate students to learn, foster meaningful student-faculty interaction, and show a commitment to student success both inside and outside the classroom.

Established jointly by the Faculty of Law and the Law Students’ Society, the Stanley M. Corbett Awards recognize outstanding teaching over a single academic year or a sustained period of excellence.

“Professor Kerr has done an exceptional job of engaging students and deepening our understanding of the material,” wrote one of her nominators. “Her passion shines through from day one, and she brings a remarkable presence to the classroom; when she speaks, she captures the attention of the entire room.”

Students also praised Kerr’s ability to encourage consideration of criminal law from multiple perspectives. Through her teaching of courses in the criminal law area, one nominator noted how she asks students to reflect on the experiences of both the accused and the victim, as well as the broader societal interests at stake. “In doing so, she helps students recognize the depth and sensitivity of the issues that the criminal law must confront, while also drawing our attention to the human realities behind these cases.”

“Professor Knutsen consistently challenges students to think differently and beyond the scope of how we understand legal theories, concepts and systems,” wrote a nominator. “He feeds our curiosity and carefully considers our position.” In giving credit and praise to students for new ideas or perspectives, he “reaffirms students of our potential and confidence as intellectuals and future legal professionals.”

For his teaching of torts, health law, and insurance courses, one nominee said they most admire Knutsen’s unwavering optimism and passion for education. “His energy is infectious and his positivity radiates a room.” Another nominator added, “His willingness to invest in his students’ growth reflects a level of dedication that exceeds expectations and demonstrates a commitment to both our academic success and professional development.”  

The awards were presented at the 2026 Law Students' Society Awards ceremony, alongside recognition of outstanding student achievement and service.
