She is the president of one of Canada’s largest investment fund companies – and will soon be helping steer the future of business in Ontario.

Sheila Murray, Law’82 (Com’79), has accepted an appointment to the Ontario government’s new Business Law Advisory Council (BLAC). The 11-member panel, which is made up of professionals with expertise in the area, will recommend changes to provincial corporate and commercial laws that will strengthen the competitiveness of Ontario businesses in the Canadian and global economies. Murray brings more than three decades of experience to her appointment.

Following a successful 25-year legal career with Blake Cassels & Graydon, she joined CI Financial Corporation in 2008 and now serves as President of the diversified wealth management firm.

Murray is also very engaged with Queen’s Law and the university. She is a loyal donor and supporter, chairs the Dean’s Council, and is a cabinet member for the University’s Initiative Campaign, which has raised more than $627 million to date.

Sheila Murray praises recent business law oriented initiatives at Queen’s Law that have seen Mohamed Khimji named the inaugural David Allgood Professor in Business Law and the launch of both a new business law scholarship and a lecture series. “I think these are wonderful developments for Queen’s Law,” says Murray. “They demonstrate a renewed focus on business law, and that’s something I applaud. The school has a well-earned reputation for strength in many areas of the law, and these new initiatives will provide opportunities to enhance the reputation and expertise of Queen’s Law in this important area.”
