“We’re so grateful to be stepping into our roles when in-person events are coming back to Queen’s Law and there’s so much excitement about what kinds of things are in store for the fall,” says President-elect Olivia Moon. “We’re mainly looking forward to meeting our new 1Ls coming into Queen’s Law and continuing to build our relationship with those who are here.”

Moon, who received the 2020-21 Spark Award for best demonstrating commitment to the law school in first year, served as President of the 1L Council. “I genuinely loved being able to connect with so many students (during a largely remote school year) and feeling like I could really be an advocate for the student body,” she says. “Serendipitously, I connected with Jin Choi, Law’93, who was the LSS President in his graduating year, and he spoke so highly of the LSS and Queen’s Law as a whole that it really made me want to continue my path with the LSS.”

There’s something else about Queen’s Law that sparked Moon’s interest in serving as LSS President. “I really want to bring back that sense of community Queen’s Law is known for,” she says. “With COVID, it’s been a little bit more difficult to promote collegiality and get to know other students, especially those in other years. One of my goals as President is to encourage cross-year interactions through great Faculty events and a warm LSS council that the 1Ls especially feel comfortable reaching out to. I really want to focus on making everyone feel like they belong here so that 30 years down the line, they have only the best stories about their time at Queen’s Law, just like Jin Choi!”

The 2022-23 LSS core executive members officially take the reins from the outgoing executive on May 1. “I want to thank Ross Denny-Jiles (Law’22), the outgoing LSS President, who has led the LSS for two consecutive years, along with the rest of the 2021-22 core executive, for their relentless efforts to advocate for the students,” says Moon. “Many people don’t get to see how much work goes on behind the scenes, and after getting a first-hand look, I can confidently say that they all made our school an even better place. While they will be missed, what’s special about Queen’s Law is that I know they’re all only a phone call away.”
