It was a fun evening for alumni and incoming students on May 4 as they joined Dean Bill Flanagan at the Vancouver office of host firm Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. There, with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, they gathered for the school’s annual reception in B.C.’s largest city.
“We had the chance to chat with Dean Flanagan about what changes are going on at the law school and to swap some humorous stories of our time in Kingston,” says Marcus Turner, Law’11, an associate with the host firm.
One of those changes the Dean announced was the appointment of leading scholar Professor Mohamed Khimji as the first holder of the David Allgood Professorship in Business Law, following a successful $1.5-million fundraising campaign.
The Dean boasted about recent upgrades made to the Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP Moot Court Room, which were funded by alumni at the firm, and also the firm’s recent renewed support for the Fasken Scholarships in Civil Procedure, Torts and Public Law. In attendance was last year’s Torts award winner, Harshi Mann, Law’17, who is working at the firm this summer.
Such events give guests an opportunity to expand their networks. “I had actually already met a couple people at other functions [in Vancouver], but we did not know we all went to Queen's,” said Max Ma, Law’15. “It was a pleasant surprise seeing each other at the reception.”
Good times were had by all as alumni reconnected and met with local students about to begin their studies at Queen’s Law in September, giving them the inside scoop on the school and the city of Kingston. “It was lovely seeing Dean Flanagan again,” said articling student Ma, explaining how things have come full circle. “As he recalled, we first met four years ago at the Halifax reception when I was a prospective student.”
