Queen’s Law professor Ardi Imseis will once again be appearing before the International Court of Justice on April 28, 2025.
Imseis, a noted scholar and practitioner of public international law, will be appearing on behalf of the State of Palestine at public hearings on Obligations of Israel in relation to the Presence and Activities of the United Nations, Other International Organizations and Third States in and in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
In the proceedings, extending over five days, the World Court will hear from the United Nations, Palestine, and 44 other States and international organizations. The proceedings were initiated by the United Nations General Assembly when, in December 2024, it requested an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, on the following question
“What are the obligations of Israel, as an occupying Power and as a member of the United Nations, in relation to the presence and activities of the United Nations, including its agencies and bodies, other international organizations and third States, in and in relation to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including to ensure and facilitate the unhindered provision of urgently needed supplies essential to the survival of the Palestinian civilian population as well as of basic services and humanitarian and development assistance, for the benefit of the Palestinian civilian population, and in support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination?”
Imseis joined Queen’s Faculty of Law in 2018, following a 12-year career as a UN official in the Middle East, first with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and then with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He works in high-level public advocacy on international law, peace and security, including a number of invited addresses to the UN Security Council.
