Scholars, practitioners, policymakers, former students, colleagues, family members, and friends gathered in Toronto on Sept. 26–27, 2025, for the Arthur Cockfield Memorial Symposium, “Tax Sovereignty in a Digital and Divided World.” Organized by Professor Jinyan Li, LLM’87, of Osgoode Hall Law School and an inter-university committee that included Queen’s Law professors Gail Henderson and Ivan Ozai, the symposium explored contemporary issues in tax law and policy while honouring the scholarly, teaching, and mentorship legacy of the late Professor Arthur Cockfield, Law’93.
In addition to Professors Li and Henderson, speakers at the dinner included Professors Catherine Brown (Calgary), Lori McMillan, Law’95, (Washburn), and Jonathan Farrar, LLM’06, (Wilfrid Laurier); Martin Sorensen, Law’98, Senior Director of Resources, Investments and Innovation at Finance Canada; Kim Maguire, Law’08, a tax partner at Osler’s Vancouver office and President of the International Fiscal Association (Canada), and family representative Eric Costen.
