Students dance up a storm and $14K for cancer research

Cabaret for a Cure, the school’s popular annual dance show and charity fundraiser hosted by the Queen’s Law Cancer Society (QLCS), reached unprecedented heights this year. A greater number of talented student dancers, as well as models in a new fashion show, performed on a larger stage in front of a bigger crowd. The incredibly fun-filled night on March 13 saw more than triple the usual funds raised as classmates, faculty, friends and parents packed the Grand Theatre in downtown Kingston, generating almost $14,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Queen’s Law ‘flips’ for justice

Macdonald Hall was recently filled with students and faculty donning colourful hair pieces – they were “flipping out” to participate in the province-wide campaign “Flip Your Wig for Justice.” Showing a united front with law schools across Ontario, Queen’s Law community members took part in several activities to raise awareness of a national crisis situation, celebrate the law students and professionals who are responding to it, and support six organizations that work to combat the reality facing vulnerable Ontarians.

Queen's prof featured in documentary that shines spotlight on secrets

Secret Trial 5 is being shown at The Screening Room this Sunday and Professor Sharry Aiken has a significant role in the film, discussing the human impact of the war on terror. The film examines the Canadian government’s use of security certificates, an immigration tool that allows the government to deport non-citizens it deems a threat to national security.

Queen’s conference to examine tax justice for women at critical time

On March 6 and 7, Feminist Legal Studies Queen’s (FLSQ) will host the conference “Women and Tax Justice at Beijing+20: Taxing and Budgeting for Sex Equality.” The event will bring to campus scholars and legal practitioners from across Canada and around the world to discuss and tax and spending laws that are undermining sex equality and how to ensure governments change these laws.

Students raise $2K with charity performance

For more than 30 years, Queen’s Law students have proven they aren’t just talented in the classroom and community – many of them have a second home on the stage! This year’s entertainers showed their musical chops on Feb. 11 at the annual Lawlapalooza. Students packed the Ale House in downtown Kingston to watch their schoolmates perform, bringing in $2,000 for two local organizations.
