Visiting Tel Aviv scholar teaches antidiscrimination law to Queen’s students

Discrimination damages the lives of many people, from general harassment to finding employment or accommodation. What questions do legal systems have to address when tackling this problem through human rights legislation, employment equity rules and other areas of the law? Professor Yofi Tirosh, a visiting scholar from Tel Aviv University, is addressing this topic in a short course for Queen’s students during her 11 days in residence from January 18 to 29.

Queen’s Law to host international trade moot

If you want to see the future face of trade law from across two continents, Kingston, Ontario will be the place to do it this spring. Students from across North and South America will be bringing their ‘A’ game to Kingston in early March to do exactly that. The All-American Regional Round of the 2016 European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) Moot on international trade law is being hosted by Queen’s Law, attracting dozens of students from competing schools from Canada to Colombia.

From accident compensation to operating a small business, insurance law is a constant, if subtle, presence in most lives. Nobody knows this better than Professor Erik Knutsen, who has co-authored the fourth edition of a leading book on the subject: Stempel and Knutsen on Insurance Coverage (4th ed.). This two-volume, 3000-page treatise on American insurance law is written for scholars and courts, as well as practitioners from all sides and of all levels of experience.

Queen’s Law explores diversity as a competitive advantage

Equity-seeking group members continue to face barriers to entering the legal profession. But they are also leading the way in breaking down these barriers. In an informal conversation with Queen’s Law students, Dhaman Kissoon, Law’89, of Kissoon and Associates, and Frank Walwyn, Law’93, a partner at WeirFoulds LLP, shared their experiences as racialized lawyers and offered practical advice to students on how to be themselves and succeed in the legal profession.

Law’79 alumnus succeeds fellow grad to lead Gowlings

A second successive lawyer with a Queen’s background will head Gowlings with the firm’s next appointment for Chair and CEO. Peter Lukasiewicz, Law’79, will take over from Scott Jolliffe, Law’76, effective January 1. Lukasiewicz is assuming his new role while Gowlings and Wragge Lawrence Graham & Co, a leading law firm in the United Kingdom, launch a new international legal practice called Gowling WLG. Lukasiewicz and Jolliffe will both serve on its global board.
